Yzma from Emperor's New Groove

For my "real world" job I work in a retail store. Around the time a convention starts or Halloween is coming, I get asked a lot for a specific piece of clothing to match a costume. This always leads me to talking to them for a few minutes about their costume. The most common thing that they tell me is that they don't have a ton of money to spend but they want an awesome costume. I totally get this because I am on a tight costume budget as well.

But working on my Yzma costume, it made me realize that it is possible to make a great costume for under $50. With a little planning, couponing, and saving a little money here and there, it is totally achievable. So I thought I would start a series on making costumes for under $50.

For my last convention I needed a “walk around costume”. This is a basic costume that I can walk around the convention in that I don't have to worry about tripping in and is comfortable. That is where Yzma came into play. She was perfect and fun to walk around in (I may have had fun yelling at my Kronk pillow prop). I made everything myself for this costume with the exception of the dress which saved a ton of money.

Here is the rundown on what I spent on my Yzma costume. Most of the stuff like, like the wire and tape, I bought once and used it on the whole costume.

Dress: $10
Black maxi dress is from H&M that was on sale online.

Hat: $10
Hand made from wire, electrical tape, duct tape, fabric, and paint.

Necklace: $10
Hand made from feathers, wire, electrical tape, duct tape, and hot glue.

Shoes: $0
I had black flip flops on hand. But you can find cheap flip flops from anywhere.

Earrings: $4
Handmade from fabric, paint, and modge podge

Eyelashes: $10
Made from H&M eyelashes, feathers, and E-6000 glue.
See the tutorial here.

Earrings:$0
I had all of the items that I needed to make these. See how I made them here.

Total: $45!

There are a few options that you can add to you cosplay if you have a little extra money hanging around.

Potion bottle Prop: $3
I found a really cheap bottle at my local craft store and filled it with clearance purple glitter.

Kronk pillow prop: $6
I had most of the items on hand to make this pillow. The only thing that I bought was the stuffing. See how I made this pillow here.

Purple Make-Up: $25/$9
I did by make-up for this costume but ran out of time to put it on for the convention. There are two kinds of purple face paint that I bought. The first was Kryolan, the make-up of the professionals (heh). I did love this and it was the perfect color for my costume. The second makeup that I tried was Mehron, it is a little cheaper but just as good. The only complaint with this was it was splotchy. With some time and a helper, you can make this work.

Pro Tip: Planning is Key!

I didn’t come up with this idea overnight. If I did, it would have cost a ton more than it did. When you have an idea of what costume you want to make, you can dissect it and figure out what is going to cost you the most, by doing that you have a goal of how much to save. I knew going into this that my hat and necklace was going to be costly. So I saved my money in a jar and when the moment came when I had a great coupon, I got all of the stuff I needed.

Just remember, you can make a great outfit! Just believe in yourself!

Saturday 7/13- Saturdays are always the most fun because that is when the big events happen and there are a ton more people that show up. We wanted to start our day early and get as much in as we could. Allie wanted to play Dungeons and Dragons Next  so I took to the tables and had the next two hours to myself. I wanted to see some panels but by the time I got up to them they were full and I couldn't fit into the chairs because of my hoopskirt being so huge! So I spent the rest of the time wondering around the convention looking at all of the costumes.

Eventually I made my way to the photobooth that the convention holds. Well, I was walking by and I got kidnapped by the people who work it. They really wanted to take my photo. I am glad that they did kidnap me because I didn't know that the convention had this going on.  The photo booth is an actual photo shoot with lights, backdrops, and other fancy photography things that I have no clue about. And to top it off, it was free! How cool was that?

While I was in there, a girl was cosplaying as Tatianna from the Frog Prince. The photographer asked if she and I wanted to do a shoot together and we both agreed. It was so much fun! She also had a frog prop and we acted like I was stealing him away from here. I can't wait to see the photos from this.

After the shoot, it was time for my favorite connecticon event, Deathmatch! I seriously look forward to this event all year. In this event, cosplayer are paired up in matches. The audience then scream and clap for their favorite to move on to the next round. Then then "battle" and the loser is "killed". I know I don't explain it well. But if you are bored one day and want to kill an hour or two, check out death match here.

I've been two five Deathmatches and this year was my second favorite(first being the year Jack Sparrow won. That guy was brilliant). I am so glad that Bill Nye the Science Guy won! I was having childhood flashbacks. My sister didn't know who he was and why I was geeking out so much.

Later that night, my sister and I headed out to Riverfest in Hartford for some good ol' fashion food truck yumminess. I have to say, we got what we asked for. It was well worth the hoards of people to get the food. Allie got cheese steak and I got pull pork tacos. I will be dreaming of this food for a while. And the best part of Riverfest happening at the same time as Connecticon? The fireworks! Being apart of the convention meant that we had our own balcony to view the fireworks. Allie and I enjoyed them!

Sunday- 7-14.

Today was the day that I was going to go as Yzma. I woke up super early to put on my purple makeup. I tried so hard to put it on but it just got all splotchy. So I made the tough decision and forgoed the purple makeup. I was so heartbroken. I still had fun wearing the rest of the costume and people still knew who I was.

Sunday is usually when my sister and I buy everything that we have been staring at all weekend. We made the usual rounds at the dealer's rooms and snagged some goodies. Allie got an awesome handmade leather journal, a knight's hat, and some other random goodies. I manage to snag some cool artwork, some Japanese soda, a Whovian car magnet, and a really awesome skirt that I can wear to work.

By this point in the day Allie and I were pooped. We said our final good-bye's to the convention and went home. It was the best weekend that I could hope for. I did learn a lot more about how to survive the convention weekend. Next year I hope to make more friends and visit more panels.

Is it next year yet? I may already be working on my next costume. ;)

Here are some more photos from Saturday!

Folks, I am suffering from a major condition. Post Con-Depression. It happens once a year and I takes just as long to get over that. What is Post Con Depression ( or PCD), its a terrible medical condition for those attending an anime conventionIt is usually caused by attendees when they've had more fun during the weekend than they usually have.

The only way I figure to help with this is to re-live my con weekend with all of you. Here is my diary  journal (if you get that reference, points to you!) of the best weekend I have had in a long time.

Friday- 11 of July 2014

I woke up super early to get ready to pick up my sister. I felt like I was making good time since I started to pack a week in advance. I am honestly surprised that everything fit in my car! The picture above is just half of what I packed into my little Honda. On my way to my sister's house, my car starts to have issues. Great! Just what I need, car problems on my vacation. By the grace of God I was able to limp my car to my sisters house. With the help of my great parents, I borrowed their car and was on my way to Hartford.

Now I kinda knew how to get to the convention center, but I wasn't 100% sure on the exit. So I thought I could use my phone GPS to get me there. He had a mind of his own and kept telling me to get off and make a U-turn. Allie and I kept yelling at him. Eventually we made it to the convention center without his help. Next issue of the day happened when we were not allowed to go into the convention garage. Why? I still don't know to this day. So we had to park across the street at the Science Center parking garage. Boy, I can tell you how many strange looks I got in my costume.

After waiting through the line to get our passes, Allie and I ventured into the convention of awesomeness. There were so many workshops and panels that we saw. The best panel that we like was That Guy With the Glasses about Movies That We All Hate.  Allie's favorite part was learning a new game called Red Dragon Inn.  I liked walking around and seeing everyones awesome costumes.

Eventually sleepiness got the best of me. We made our way to our top floor room and fell asleep to How To Train Your Dragon.

I just got back from an amazing weekend at Connecticon! I will post a re-cap of the weekend events later. But I really wanted to show you all the finished Anastasia costume. These are just a few of the photos that I had taken of me. I did a mini photo shoot and I am waiting to see those photos.

It's closing in! Connecticon is just a little over a month away! I am not excited at all (actually I am, but I don't know if sarcasm can be read over the internet).

It is time for me to start adding in all of the little pieces of my costume. I am sure that I will be doing this for quite a while. The first thing that I did was add the detial to the circles on the dress. In the reference photos it doesn't show a pattern. But I felt like the dress needed a little sprucing up. I googled photos of Russian decals and came up with this.
There were 13 of these I had to do. Whew!

Next up was adding in the blue sash and jewel. It was a simple add to the costume, but it heighten the look of the costume.

Most of the dress is now done. It is just fine tuning the costume to make it fit like a glove. Now I just have to figure out how to sit in this dress. Hmmmm....

One of my costumes this year is Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove. Sadly my sister did not want to dress up with me as Kronk or Kuzco (I'd even offered to be the guy so she can be the girl). I did feel like I wanted a prop to play with in my character. So I decided to make a plushie version of Kronk and say he took a plushie potion by accident.

May I present Kronk, the plushie!

I feel like I should start a series calle "Places Kronk Should Not Be". We will see how this works out.

Tutorial to make your own Kronk coming soon!

My what a busy week it has been for me. I do loathe having a real life job that cuts into my costume designing time. I was able to have a day off in between the craziness of the week. I sat down for a straight 5 hours to get the majority of my crown done. I have to say, I am kinda in love with my crown.

Believe it or not, I had to use hot glue to make the lines of the crown. There were a ton of lines to do. Not to mention that I would do a line with the glue then quickly press glitter onto it. After all that was done, I modge podged MORE glitter to the crown. I think I will be eating glitter for weeks after this project.

The only thing that I don't like about the crown is that I made it a tiny bit big. So now I have to figure out a way to add padding to the crown so that it doesn't slip off my head mid-convention.

This weekend I wanted to start on my crown for the Anastasia costume. I could have waited until it was close to the convention...but I love crowns! I mean, who doesn't love looking in the mirror and seeing a bright shiny object on your head.

This photo amuses me. The crown is suppose to be "crystal", but because I am a poor working girl I use glitter. Hence "Faking it for the Camera". No? Not funny? Well, it was in my head.

Today my day was spent cutting out many many circles for the bodice detail on my dress. There were 16 dots that I had to cut out and then hem. This is just the first step in the bodice detail. Next up for me is to hand stitch these dots to the dress. After that is the step that I am looking forward too. GLITTERIZING! I can't wait to make this dress sparkle!

In between doing all of these dots, I decided to work on my wig for the costume. I was tired of trying on my dress and not seeing the complete look. This is just a temporary styling of the wig so that I can try the whole costume on. While doing this I realized that I need to brush up on my styling skills. Anyone have any good tips and resources?

Guess what I just made guys.... a hoop skirt! It was a long process but it was so worth it. Just look how it flairs out my Anastasia costume! Just don't mind the see through hoops. I still have to make the pennifore for it.

Don't worry, I will go into detail later about how I made my hoop skirt. Let just say that I made it for under 40$. It will be a staple in my costume closet.
