Quick DIY Hades

About two weeks ago I was invited to a Villans themed birthday party. I was super excited for this because being a villain for a couple of hours is super fun. So I started to think of who I wanted to be. I could always fall back on a couple of costumes that I have in my closet. I had Yzma and a pirate costume, but nothing really spoke to me. I've always wanted to be Hades from Hercules. 




So being the crazy person I am, I decided to make Hades in three days. Yes, that is right. Three days. Not even days, but three nights due to my normal everyday job. But I did it. Wig and all. 

It all started with what I have in my closet. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a costume I knew I was only going to wear for a couple of hours. Thankfully I had a black maxi dress in my closet as well as a pair of strap be sandals. Step one complete. 



Next I went to Amazon and found  A dark blue and light blue wig for $10 each.  decided to take some wig fibers from the light blue wig and so them into the dark blue wig to create the flaming effect. After three hours of trying to style the wig, I gave up trying to make it stand up like in this photo. I decided on doing a simple French twist with some hair flowing down. 


Next I took an old leather skirt that didn't fit anymore and reinvented it to a toga. It was already cut into a circle skirt and flowed nicely. The only thing I had to do to it was add a little tuck to the front to get the folds right. 

Since I wanted to wear my black maxi dress again after the party, I had to come up with a easy solution to make Hades sleeves. What I did was take old black ribbon and some old blue fabric and cut into triangles. I glued the triangles to the ribbon and the safety pin the ribbon to my dress. This was super fast and easy which is great since I was running out of time to work on the dress. 

Last thing to complete my look was to make myself blue. In the past I have tried to put myself purple and various other colors with different body paint it will on the market. This time around I want to go cheap and easy so what I did was fine bright blue eyeshadow that came in a rich pigment. Then all I did was repeat myself in a blue eyeshadow. I used black to create some contours on my face. Next time I think I would buy two shades of blue to give myself more depth. But by using this method I was able to create a great effect on my skin that lasted thought the party. And it only cost me 5$ for the eye shadow. 

Sadly I was running late and was not able to take full body pictures of myself. So enjoy these photos of me and my friends at the party. I hope to take a full photo shoot with Hades and work on it to make this a full cosplay for me . I hope to face my fear and get yellow contacts for this costume. Maybe next time. :)

I just got back from an amazing weekend at Connecticon! I will post a re-cap of the weekend events later. But I really wanted to show you all the finished Anastasia costume. These are just a few of the photos that I had taken of me. I did a mini photo shoot and I am waiting to see those photos.

Anastasia Cosplay WIP

It's closing in! Connecticon is just a little over a month away! I am not excited at all (actually I am, but I don't know if sarcasm can be read over the internet). 

It is time for me to start adding in all of the little pieces of my costume. I am sure that I will be doing this for quite a while. The first thing that I did was add the detial to the circles on the dress. In the reference photos it doesn't show a pattern. But I felt like the dress needed a little sprucing up. I googled photos of Russian decals and came up with this.
There were 13 of these I had to do. Whew! 

Next up was adding in the blue sash and jewel. It was a simple add to the costume, but it heighten the look of the costume.
 


Most of the dress is now done. It is just fine tuning the costume to make it fit like a glove. Now I just have to figure out how to sit in this dress. Hmmmm....

WIP PHOTOS OF ANASTASIA CROWN NO. 2

My what a busy week it has been for me. I do loathe having a real life job that cuts into my costume designing time. I was able to have a day off in between the craziness of the week. I sat down for a straight 5 hours to get the majority of my crown done. I have to say, I am kinda in love with my crown.


Believe it or not, I had to use hot glue to make the lines of the crown. There were a ton of lines to do. Not to mention that I would do a line with the glue then quickly press glitter onto it. After all that was done, I modge podged MORE glitter to the crown. I think I will be eating glitter for weeks after this project.


The only thing that I don't like about the crown is that I made it a tiny bit big. So now I have to figure out a way to add padding to the crown so that it doesn't slip off my head mid-convention.

Anastasia Costume WIP: The wig and bodice details

Today my day was spent cutting out many many circles for the bodice detail on my dress. There were 16 dots that I had to cut out and then hem. This is just the first step in the bodice detail. Next up for me is to hand stitch these dots to the dress. After that is the step that I am looking forward too. GLITTERIZING! I can't wait to make this dress sparkle! 


In between doing all of these dots, I decided to work on my wig for the costume. I was tired of trying on my dress and not seeing the complete look. This is just a temporary styling of the wig so that I can try the whole costume on. While doing this I realized that I need to brush up on my styling skills. Anyone have any good tips and resources?



WIP Anastasia Cosplay

Guess what I just made guys.... a hoop skirt! It was a long process but it was so worth it. Just look how it flairs out my Anastasia costume! Just don't mind the see through hoops. I still have to make the pennifore for it.




Don't worry, I will go into detail later about how I made my hoop skirt. Let just say that I made it for under 40$. It will be a staple in my costume closet.

Who else is  dying for spring to get here? I am tired of bundling up just to head out to my craft room. With cold fingers and toes, I was able to get some progress done on my Anastasia costume. Yay! The major points of the costume are now done. It is just time for some fine tuning. 


One of these days I promise to get better pictures. I just need to come up with a plan to get my boyfriend to help me take pictures. 

Also, I tried on my wig today. It needs to be put up into a bum, but I couldn't resist trying it on.

"Where in the world is Carmen SanDeigo"  That song never ceases to amuse me. And for most kids that grew up in the 90's will admit to the same.  This costume was easy for me to pull together. A red coat found on etsy for 80$, $10 red ebay had, and black boots transformed me to this world traveled spy.

This year for Connecticon, I decided to up my cosplaying. It was a fine line of picking a well known character and finding something unique that people will get. So I decided to go with a movie that I have love since I was a kid, Fox's ( yes, not disney. That gets me so mad) Anastasia. I am making her ballgown from later in the movie. It's the one below if you don't remember it. 


It should be lots of fun to make. I have never done anything to this scale before. It is a ton of fun just so you know. I get to wear a hoop skirt (and yes, I know that sounds weird).
