Surviving Conventions: Heat Exhaustion

We all have probably suffered heat exhaustion at one point in our lives and we just don't know it. It is easy to forget to take care of yourself when you are running around having a blast. And it doesn't help that most conventions are held in the summer with poor air conditionings. So I am here with a few tips to make sure your body is in great condition for your convention weekend.

First we will list what the symptoms are from heat exhaustion. It is pretty common things that you don't think about.

Here are a few examples:
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
The treatments for heat exhaustion are pretty simple. Here are my tips to battle the heat:

  • Drink water!!! I can't stress this enough. It is the simplest thing to make you feel better.
  • Gatorade or other sports drinks with salt and electrolytes help your body retain water. These are miracle workers when you are feeling dehydrated.
  • Stay away from caffeine and alcohol. This just makes you more thirsty.
  • Take breaks from your costume. I usually find a nice corner and take off a few layers. This helps out a ton! I have seen other cosplayers do this as well so don't feel weird doing it.
  • If you can, try taking a damp cloth and blotting yourself. Just be careful with makeup. You don't want it to run.
If you don't feel some relief within 30 minutes or so with these treatments, see a medical personal.  We don't want you to have a heat stroke!

So it is pure and simple. Just remember to drink lots of water and you should be fine.
