If you are a folower on Insagram, then you have seen the lastest trend floating around. It's called #CosplayAsthetic. Take a couple of photos of your cosplay and you add a couple of photos that match the character of theme of that cosplay. A few of my friends did it and they all looked amazing. They inspired me to create a few of my characters.



Quick DIY Hades

About two weeks ago I was invited to a Villans themed birthday party. I was super excited for this because being a villain for a couple of hours is super fun. So I started to think of who I wanted to be. I could always fall back on a couple of costumes that I have in my closet. I had Yzma and a pirate costume, but nothing really spoke to me. I've always wanted to be Hades from Hercules. 




So being the crazy person I am, I decided to make Hades in three days. Yes, that is right. Three days. Not even days, but three nights due to my normal everyday job. But I did it. Wig and all. 

It all started with what I have in my closet. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a costume I knew I was only going to wear for a couple of hours. Thankfully I had a black maxi dress in my closet as well as a pair of strap be sandals. Step one complete. 



Next I went to Amazon and found  A dark blue and light blue wig for $10 each.  decided to take some wig fibers from the light blue wig and so them into the dark blue wig to create the flaming effect. After three hours of trying to style the wig, I gave up trying to make it stand up like in this photo. I decided on doing a simple French twist with some hair flowing down. 


Next I took an old leather skirt that didn't fit anymore and reinvented it to a toga. It was already cut into a circle skirt and flowed nicely. The only thing I had to do to it was add a little tuck to the front to get the folds right. 

Since I wanted to wear my black maxi dress again after the party, I had to come up with a easy solution to make Hades sleeves. What I did was take old black ribbon and some old blue fabric and cut into triangles. I glued the triangles to the ribbon and the safety pin the ribbon to my dress. This was super fast and easy which is great since I was running out of time to work on the dress. 

Last thing to complete my look was to make myself blue. In the past I have tried to put myself purple and various other colors with different body paint it will on the market. This time around I want to go cheap and easy so what I did was fine bright blue eyeshadow that came in a rich pigment. Then all I did was repeat myself in a blue eyeshadow. I used black to create some contours on my face. Next time I think I would buy two shades of blue to give myself more depth. But by using this method I was able to create a great effect on my skin that lasted thought the party. And it only cost me 5$ for the eye shadow. 

Sadly I was running late and was not able to take full body pictures of myself. So enjoy these photos of me and my friends at the party. I hope to take a full photo shoot with Hades and work on it to make this a full cosplay for me . I hope to face my fear and get yellow contacts for this costume. Maybe next time. :)

I'll Make it: 1940's Dressing Robe

You know when you're watching a TV show and you fall in love with characters outfit. So you spend the next couple of days trying to find that outfit. After hours and hours searching for this outfit you come to the conclusion that does not exist and costumers made them selves.




This happened to me recently when I was watching pretty little liars with the flashback episode. I fell love with Spencer's 1940s dress she wore. I looked high and low for any sort of pattern to create this outfit. But all I was able to find us a photo of this pattern


This meant I had to create my very own pattern. I have never been strong and drafting patterns but I wanted to challenge myself to create this look. 

The first step I did was to take a pattern of the shirt that I knew I can alter easily from there draped fabric on my dress form to make the silhouette that I wanted. A few nips and hems later (as well as a few hair pulling) I had a finished product. 




When I remake this dress robe, I plan on making a few alterations to the patterns. I'd probably make the top of the sleeves less poofy and the bottom more poofy. I'm not in love with the waist, so I would probably revisit that. 

It has been a great learning experience for me. And with all new things, it takes practice and patience to master. I look forward to remaking this. 






Feeling so bleh...

So lately I've been in a kind of funk. Those times when you really want to do something creative but can't seem to get the idea from your head to your fingers. That has been me since the last convention in November. But I am not going to stop trying to create. As an artist, I need that outlet or else I will go insane. I'm sure you all know about this. 


What I have been working on lately is just a Robson cosplay that I may wear for CTCON this year. I say may because there are so may costumes that I would love to make, and not enough days to wear it. If you are a streaming geek and love D&D (dungeons and dragons), then you know about this awesome stream called Critical Role on Geek and Sundrys twitch channel. It's basically a bunch of awesome voice actors playing D&D. I love it and love the characters these people created. So I decided to try my had at making on of them. 

Her name is Keyleth, and she is the Druid in the group. She has awesome polymorph and elemental abilities. Here is what she looks like:

I would love to do the whole crew one day. But I thought I would start small. Seeing as how I have never made armor before. I shall keep you all posted on the success of failure of my armor making attempts. 

New year

Hello old friends. It has been a doozy of a holiday season hasn't it? I don't know about you, but I still can't believe that it is 2016.  It is always sad to say goodbye to a great year that has helped me grow to the person that I wanted to be. I went on vacation for the first time without my family, I bought a new car, started a new job, and was able to get back to the thing I love most (acting). I just hope 2016 it going to be as great. 



To start off the new year, I wanted to clean out my studio. For a long time it has been a place for me to collect useless things that I might "make over". We all have those thoughts, am I right? It was all starting to pile up in my tiny room. Yesterday I decided enough was enough.  Thus began my new year cleaning streak.

Here is what my studio looked like before. 
This is the controlled chaos. I had things everywhere and anywhere.  Under things, in boxes, hidden in closests. It was everywhere! Not to mention that the red "wallpaper" was fading.  

The cleaned up studio after a day's work. There is still a ton more for me to get to. I don't dare touch the closest in this room yet. I swear there is something living I in there. That might be a task that I will tackle on a snow day. 

It is a slow start but I am looking forward to a clean work space.

Mohegan Comic Con

Who knew that there would be so many conventions in Connecticut and surrounding areas. Earlier this year I found out that a convention was being held locally and a nearby casino. Naturally I would wanted to go. As time draws closer to the convention I found out I can only go one day. This was a sad time for me. The one day that would be good enough for me. 

It is a smaller convention compared to Connecticon, but it had bigger stars in attendance. The atmosphere is a bit different as well. At Connecticon there would be more cosplayers than regular people in street clothes. At this convention there were more people in street clothes then cosplay. When I first walked into the casino I was only one dressed up. I thought to myself,"where were the other cosplayers?" Thankfully I met more people in line who dressed up as well.


Another thing that was different compared to all the conventions was the time. Mostly vegan start early in the morning at 10 this convention started at 2 PM and lasted until 8pm. There were also stricter rules about face make up and perhaps due to it being tribal land. Thankfully I didn't bring my umbrella  for my Jane Porter  costume or else I would have gone through major weapons check.  


This convention held a ton more comic book vendors which serves it right being in a comic book convention. I was also very impressed with a lot of the local comic book shops in the vendor room. One vendor, Sarge's comic book shop, held tabletop gaming demonstrations all day. I enjoyed getting to play Coup with my sister. 

 

They also had a ton of photo opportunities stations. There was two Indiana Jones seen set up as well as to backgrounds with the convention logos. I wish more conventions that we went to did  this. Sadly I did not get a chance to take these photos. I was too busy having fun. Oop! 

One of my favorite moments were getting to hang out with an old friend of mine. She dressed up as the Kimmy Schmit from the netflix show. Another great moment was getting photobombed by a balloon minion. 



Well I wish I had more time to explore this new convention. I heard Saturday was a blast with a ton more cosplayers. I did have a great time. I hope the convention stays local for next year. 

DisneyBound.....what is that?

What is DisneyBound and why is everyone talking about it? Trust me you are not the only one that is thinking that. For those of you who are yelling at me saying that it has been around for a while now, you should really know this, I know. I've just been too sucked into my world that I didn't know what this term is.

DisneyBound is way to dress up as your favorite characters using items from your closet or local mall. It is a brilliant way to cosplay on a more comfortable level when you are at a theme park or the last day of convention. It was started by Leslie Kay on her tumblr blog  when she took iconic Disney characters and made affable version of these characters. It is now my favorite thing to look for on pinterest.

Now that you know what it is, here are some of my favorite Disneybound versions:


Isn't it the best idea ever? It makes me want to get out of my "everything I own is black" comfort zone when I am shopping. It also allows me to and Geek to my outfits in a little way.

The one about the convention Pt 2

I am still on a convention high from Connecticon two weekends ago. I still am going through all of the photos that people are posting on the facebook page re-living the awesome moments that we had. 



Here are some highlights from the last two days.


1. Death Match!

My sister and I look forward to this every year! It takes cosplayers and put them together in a match of death. The victory is determined by the audiences applause for their favorite character. What I love most about this main event is the randomness that happens in between  the matches. A couple of years ago one of the characters had a toy bear that the host Moogli commandeered. The audience as a whole named him Odin. Well Odin made a surprise appearance this year and it was great. 



Another one of my favorite moments was the winner of last years match Bill Nye the Science Guy. He basically stole the show this year as he acted as the death wrangler for those who lost. Every time he came onstage, the audience started to chant "BILL, BILL, BILL".

And this terrific 10 year old kid won Death Match this year. He was wearing stilts and walking up and down stairs. This kid had some serious talent and I am glad that he won.

2. My first Cosplay Contest

This year I took the plunge and entered myself into a costume contest with Jane Porter. I knew I wasn't going to win, but I did want to push myself into doing something that I would not normally do during a convention. I am glad that I did this and it has taught me new things that I will take with me when I enter into my next one.



3. Riverfest!

As I mentioned before, this years convention happened the same time as Hartford's Riverfest. Lots and lots of food trucks and an amazing firework display. This year we had a prime spot from our hotel to see the fireworks. So my sister and I ordered room service ( the first time ever for me) and we enjoyed the view with air conditioning. 





4. Sword fighting

The last thing that my sister and I did was to visit a German Sword fighting demonstration. Oh my was that fun! Not to mention that we sat next to a guy that owns his own school and was giving us insight on the exercises they were showing us. And then, they gave me a sword. Well, not a real one. But there were giving lessons on the swords and I participated. Oh my was it fun! Makes me want to take up lessons. Too bad there is no where close were they give lessons. 




All in all, it was a wonderful weekend. Probably one of the best conventions I've been to in a while. I can't wait to go again. Here are some photos that I took of awesome cosplayers.
